Michael,

I understand that you can’t comment on the book specifically. The immediacy of the controversy with that book is really just a stepping off point for a larger discussion.

I do hope in some future post, totally unrelated to the Spears book, you’ll be able to share how you navigate business vs. Bible (profit vs. piety) issues as the world’s largest Christian publisher with distribution in both the CBA and the ABA. I know Thomas Nelson defined some theological criteria for authors/books this past year, but how far do (can) you go with moral issues? Do CBA concerns (the smaller potential market) trump ABA possibilities, or the other way around? Does TN have written policies and criteria to apply to non-theological controversies surrounding books, or is it all case-by-case?

You don’t need to respond to this email. I’m just planting an idea seed for a future post. I’m a regular reader, and I regularly push FWIS on my friends. I so appreciate your clear, biblical thinking and would enjoy getting your perspective on this area. It is certainly a “critical issue” topic in the larger discussion of how declining evangelicalism (in my view anyway) interfaces with an ascendant seculuar culture, especially in the marketplace.

Thanks for the e-mail. Keep that dad of yours (a former MARINE) under control. If you have the fishing available, that will keep him happy.
This is a good time to reflect on the past year and what we can make and expect for the coming year. Only about 150 days of school left and soooo many students to put up with but I can handle it. Life is good here in Idaho.

Unfortunately, I can’t share much beyond the press release we issued last week. We did discuss it and pray about it at the highest levels of the company. We believe the book (which is still being written) will be consistent with our mission and values. Unfortunately, anything we say gets twisted by the tabloid media and takes on a life of its own. So we probably won’t be saying much between now and when the book is published. We’ll let the book speak for itself.

After you’ve had a good rest, I hope we’ll be hearing your thoughts about the Lynne Spears book in light of the Jamie Lynn Spears news (that apparently is still playing out). How does Thomas Nelson, which is a Christian publisher with secular distribution channels, navigate that kind of controversy? A secular publisher would probably just consider it great publicity for a book about being a pop culture mother. What business and biblical criteria do you apply to a situation like this? I think your insights, as much as you are free to offer anyway, will be instructive for all of us.

Our baby girl is here from Phoenix with her new fiance so we’re doing pretty much what you’re doing–minus the work of course. We’ve been on a Pirates of the Caribbean marathon.
