Thomas Nelson Wins Evangelical Book of the Year

The Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA) just announced that our Word of Promise audio bible won the “Book of the Year” award for 2008. Wayne Hastings, Senior Vice President and Group Publisher for our Bible & Reference Group, accepted the award at the Christian Book Awards, held in Orlando, Florida, at the International Christian Retail Show (ICRS).

Word of Promise Book of the Year

The amazing thing is that it is the first time in the 30-year history of the award that it went to a non-book. Think about it. First, it’s an audio Bible, rather than a traditional print book. Second, it’s a Bible rather than a book. This is fascinating. What does it mean for the future of publishing?

Personally, I think that this proves the Bible is more relevant than ever. We live in desperate times. People are seeking hope. They want a transcendent perspective. They want something that connects them to ultimate reality. Something that gives meaning to the events of their lives.

I am so proud of Wayne and our whole Bible team. This is a break-through in every sense of that word. It is so significant that even USA Today reported on it.

If you want to sample the Word of Promise, you can do so here. Enjoy! It is an auditory feast.

Congratulations! You are getting me to rethink my understanding of the role for a publishing company. First, this is audio, not print media. Secondly, your distribution is online download. There’s nothing that you mass-produce or ship in the mail!

Congratulations Mike, Wayne and the Nelson Team! Could Johann Gutenberg be rolling over in his grave…553 years later? Oral tradition to written tradition. Written tradition to the VISUAL TRADITION!
    Another first for Nelson!

Praise the Lord for putting in the hearts of His people to exalt His Word in this manner!

The NKJV is such a beautiful translation. After several years of studying a dynamic equivalence translation Bible, the Scriptures opened up to me in astonishing ways when I encountered the power of complete equivalence translation. I am utterly convinced: this world offers nothing more dynamic than most accurately conveying God’s Word in a reader’s native tongue.

I am anxious to obtain a copy of the Word of Promise audio Bible and discover what new ways the Lord may use it in my life.

  4. Cheers for the Nelson team!

What’s exciting about this is to imagine people are listening to God’s Word as they drive, jog, walk, travel in their daily lives.

    Congratulations, Mike and TNI!

I agree, the Bible is more needed and necessary than ever!

    Blessings, Rachel

Congratulations for making God’s Word popular in a new format.

Audio Bibles are a real solution to the growing segment of non-readers in the modern world. To the 50% of the world that is unable to read, Audio Bibles are the only way people will discover the truths and promises His Word contains.

  7. What amazing news! I’m so proud of Wayne and the TN team!

  8. Not only this, but the winning of 2 out of 9 of the Christy Awards!

In the contemporary category, CHASING FIREFLIES by Charles Martin.

And in the Visionary/Sci-Fi/Fantasy category, SCARLET by Stephen R. Lawhead.

Triple Congrats to you Mike, and everyone at Thomas Nelson.

  9. Barry Galvin says:

The Word of Promise is an excellent production!! It’s so good to hear the Bible read this way, with the wonderful accompanying music. It really brings alive the words and the actors are all first class. Well done to all you and God Bless!
