Help Randy Land His Dream Job

My good friend and neighbor, Randy Elrod, is trying to land his dream job. I want to help him, and I want to ask for your help as well. Why would you do this? Because it is an opportunity for you to experience first-hand how you might be able to use social media in yet another aspect of your business.

First, let me give you some background. Murphy-Goode is a family-owned winery located within Sonoma Country’s Alexander Valley. They are looking for someone who really knows how to use Web 2.0, including blogs, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube , so that they can help the company get the word out about their wines. As the co-creator of LifeWork 2.0, Randy is the perfect candidate.

To find just the right person, Murphy-Goode created a contest. They have asked each applicant to create a 60-second video and upload it to the contest site. They are then asking each applicant to demonstrate their social media influence by having their friends and followers vote for their video. Getting the most votes doesn’t guarantee a job, but it does help get an interview.

This is where you come in. Please take 70 seconds to complete these four simple steps:

  1. Watch Randy’s very cool video on the Murphy-Goode web site.
  2. Enter your email address to vote for Randy.
  3. Wait for the verification email and click on the link inside the message body. Note: Your vote will not count until you do this!
  4. Tweet this post (or mention it on your Facebook page).

That’s it. Pretty neat little experiment huh? Not only is Murphy-Goode using the “wisdom of crowds” to find the right person for this job, but they are using this program to get huge publicity for their brand and products.

Question: Now that you have voted, how could you adapt a process like this to promote your brand or products?

This is a brilliant way for a company to hire the right person and get amazing social media buzz at the same time. My best to Randy and my congratulations to Murphy-Goode for a great viral marketing campaign!

  2. Okay that was way fun to do! What a great idea!

  3. Julie says:

My question: If Randy has done everything he says in his video, why in the world does he want a temporary job in California?

  4. Randy says:

Ha! Because I can, that's why. I would love to have the opportunity to live in California, a much different region of the country than Tennessee, for six months and learn more about the wine industry and agriculture's highest art form.

The beauty of my life-is that it is untethered. The world is as small as my iPhone. I can live and work in Tennessee or California or Italy.

Michael, Thanks so much for the post and support of my quest and the affirmation of innovative companies such as Murphy-Goode.
