7 Reasons You Should Join Me on a Caribbean Cruise for Creatives

I am really excited about our Caribbean Cruise for Creatives on April 2–7, 2011. We still have a few slots available, and I would love for you to join us. At the bottom of this post, I will tell you how to sign up and get the opportunity to pitch your book to Alice Sullivan, a savvy book editor with extensive experience.

If you can’t see this video in your RSS reader or email, then click here.

The cruise is hosted by Randy Elrod and his wife, Chris, two of my best friends and a true “Christian creative.” What is a creative? Anyone who creates—or wants to create—art. This includes book authors, recording artists, graphic artists, bloggers, worship leaders, photographers, culinary artists, and more.

If you are just getting started with Evernote, I suggest that you buy Brett Kelly’s remarkably practical e-book, Evernote Essentials, 4.0. It will save you HOURS of learning Evernote on your own.

The theme of the cruise is “The Creative Life.” In addition to Randy and his wife, Chris, I will be speaking, along with Pete Wilson and Ken Davis.

  • I will speak on “The Creative Life: How We Work”
  • Pete will be speak on “The Creative Life: How We Worship”
  • Randy and Chris will speak on “The Creative Life: How We Love”
  • Ken will speak on “The Creative Life: How We Enjoy”

In addition, the five of us will host a Q&A session on the creative life. I am especially looking forward to this session.

Here are seven reasons you should make plans NOW to join us:

  1. You will be able to hang out and interact with like-minded people for five days.
  2. You will hear stimulating talks from some very creative people.
  3. You will experience one of the best cruise ships in the world.
  4. You will get a healthy dose of fresh air, sunshine, and water.
  5. You will eat some exquisite food.
  6. You will be able to relax, kickback, and recharge.
  7. You will be able to leave winter behind and get a fantastic jump on spring.

Perhaps most important, particularly if you want to get a book published, you will have a chance to pitch your book to Alice Sullivan, a former Thomas Nelson editor, who now owns her own editorial development company.

How will this work?

  • I agreed to listen to pitches from the first 12 people who signed up. (All these slots are taken.)
  • Alice will meet with the next 12 people who sign up. We still have several slots available—but these will go quickly!
  • After that, we will pick one winner from those who sign up to meet with me.

How much does it cost? The entry-level price is only $749 per person. That price includes all taxes, tips, and the conference fee itself. (Note: your travel to Miami is not included in this price.)

All of the speakers—me included—have waived our speaking fees. One hundred percent of the conference fee ($99 of the $749) will go to benefit Kalein, a retreat center that Randy founded to inspire and mentor Christian artists.

In addition, everyone who registers through me will receive a free copy of my two eBooks, “Writing a Winning Fiction Book Proposal” and “Writing a Winning Non-Fiction Book Proposal.”

To qualify for the free e-books and the opportunity to pitch your book to Alice (or me if you are the one picked) you must register here. This will also ensure the best price and a berth on this “creative voyage.”

How I would love to join you and everyone else on this cruise! It sounds like an amazing time. However, my work schedule will not permit.

      Maybe next year …

We saw your video on Randy’s blog. Looking forward to hearing more in detail

My wife and two of our children will be joining me on the cruise. We are excited about the whole concept. It is our first cruise.

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

Awesome. It is my first, too.

  • http://www.liveonpurposecoach.com Dwright

Every year I attend two personal/professional development conferences. This just might be the one for me this year in addition to the other one that I have already selected. Thank you for the invite!

  • http://twitter.com/snidermatthew AtomicPopcorn

I only need one but wish the pocket book could afford it.

  • http://twitter.com/ThatGuyKC K.C. Procter

I won’t be attending (this time), but the cruise sounds amazing!!

Will be praying everyone is safe and inspired.

  • http://twitter.com/B_Schebs Brent Schebler

Sounds like an amazing opportunity to grow and learn with some awesome speakers. Looks like I will have to create a new savings fund for next years.

My wife and I signed up the first time around, but the addition of Alice Sullivan makes this sound even better. I took a look at her website and bio. She is very accomplished and will bring a new dynamic to the cruise. This will allow more of your readers to go and will definitely be the place to be in April. I can’t wait!

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

I can’t wait to spend time with you, John.

My husband and I have been wanting to take a cruise, but won’t be able to make it this year. Your cruise sounds like something we would really enjoy. Do you have any of the details of next year’s cruise? Thanks! Enjoy!

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

No, I think will have to see how this one goes.

  • http://twitter.com/joerob577 Joseph Robinson

Schedule and finances won’t allow me to come on the cruise. But are there any plans to make audio from the speaking sessions available, either as a live stream or downloadable later? I would gladly pay the conference fee to be able to get the content from those sessions.

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

I’ll have to let Randy respond to this, since it is his conference. Thanks.

  • Kim Bruce

Oh my goodness, Uncle Mike!!!! I would LOVE to do this! I’ll have to talk to Rob and see if we can make it happen!
    Kim

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

That would be fantastic, Kim. It would be a blast to have you and Rob!

  • Ashley Musick

Sounds fun and interesting. Perhaps you can eat all that fabulous food and listen to the speakers at the same time. : )

  • http://www.yuzzi.com Rick Yuzzi

I love cruises, and the guest speakers and content sound great. In April I’ll be on my own cruise with great content and people. Taking the family on a Disney cruise, with speakers like Mickey, Donald and Goofy. :-)

    • http://stevencribbs.com Steven Cribbs

That sounds like an inspiring cruise :)

  • http://www.jeffrandleman.com Jeff Randleman

I would love to join you in something like this. I don’t have a book to pitch… yet. But the chance to hang with some other creatives would be awesome. I’m just not sure that I could make this happen financially at this time. Sounds great though!

  • http://missionalmamassoul.blogspot.com/ Amy

I know Randy and Chris. Many years ago, they worked at our home/sending church. I taught one of their daughters. They are talented people! Wish I could go.

  • http://randyelrod.com Randy

    I can’t wait!!

All of you “first timers” — you are going to absolutely fall in love with the relaxation and camaraderie a cruise affords. There is no adequate description of the peace that comes upon leaving the dock for the open sea.

For the myriad benefits, cruising is one of the most affordable vacations available. You’re talking fabulous lodging, sumptuous food, perfect weather, the Caribbean, creative speakers and tropical islands for little more than a $100 a day.

Thanks, Mike for this great post.

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

You are welcome, Randy. I can’t wait to be with you.

  • http://uma-maheswaran.blogspot.com/ Uma Maheswaran S

Looks like an interesting proposition to me. But, I can make it when I move to US. Looking forward to your sharing of experiences after the cruise. Have a wonderful blast!

  • http://twitter.com/NewEnglandHiker Roy Wallen

Having never been on a cruise, this one sounds like it would be fun. The idea of being bound to a ship for a week doesn’t have much appeal but the content would likely avoid the feeling of being captured. Best wishes for success on it, I look forward to reading more on how it goes.

  • TNeal

I’m familiar with different book conferences (CWG’s “Writing for the Soul” is coming up soon) but your April cruise doesn’t get my attention except once a year. I need to put you on the calendar a whole lot sooner. You probably announce it beyond your blog but I don’t see the info until you promote it in this way. That means two things for me.

First, I’m not financially prepared for the trip despite the fact it’s not exorbitantly priced. Second, my chances of pitching a book decrease.

I recognize a lot of what happens in the writing world happens somewhere beyond a formalized appointment. Conversations take place at dinner tables and in hallways/passageways.

I also recognize this too is in the Lord’s hands. Looking forward to some day traveling the seas with you. Until then, bon voyage.

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

I understand. However, I did announce it back on September 6, 2010. Perhaps you weren’t reading my blog then or just missed it.

      • TNeal

I simply missed it or, due to better weather at the time, it missed me in September. I do remember reading the post for the previous trip so it’s not like this cruise is entirely new to me. I’m now tuned into Spring 2013 (maybe even as early as 2012).

Last week I paid off the cruise for me and a friend! I’m looking forward to the cruise.

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

Awesome. I’m glad you are coming.

    Hi Mike,

Interesting. Love the pioneering that seems behind it. What is the total group size at this point?

    Rick

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

I suspect we will end up with 80-100.

  • http://twitter.com/2020VisionBook Joshua Hood

Wow, what an amazing trip! Definitely interested. How many people are expected to attend?

    Joshua Hood
    2020visiononline.org

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

I think we’ll have 80–100. Big enough to be interesting; small enough to be intimate.

  • http://www.bigb94.webs.com Brandon

Just curious- are you going to speak on the cruise?

  • Anonymous

Thanks for the info. This is so tempting…I dream of the day I can attend my first cruise, especially a “creative” one. Maybe someday when I start making good money. :) I’m a starving artist in ministry. Good thing my husband has a decent job.

I’m sure all who attend will have lots to share. I look forward to hearing more.

  • http://www.christopherscottblog.typepad.com/ Christopher Scott

I won’t be “cruising” because I already have my vacation time planned for the year.

    However,
Reading this post reminds me of a Tony Robbins quote. He shared the statement and taught about it for almost two hours at a one of his four-day conferences.

“Who you spend time with is who you become.”

It’s a great statement about how the people we spend time with mold us and shape our lives. We need to be careful who we allow to influence us.

My friend, Jodi Womack says the same thing slightly different, “Who do you play with?”

This cruise looks like it will help Christian creatives to grow and develop into more capable artists.

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

I think Tony is right. That’s probably worth a blog post!

  • Jeff Jones

I would love to be a part of this event but I have Dad duties during that time frame.

  • http://twitter.com/MattBeard Matt Beard

Wow, there is nothing like spending time with other creatives to get the creative juices flowing. I can’t imagine the amount of ideas that will come from this week. Although this season doesn’t afford me much vacation time, I hope I get a chance to attend an event like this in the future.

  • http://jeffgoins.myadventures.org Jeff Goins

Sounds like guys are going to have a blast.

  • Jlilliandesigns

I am going to consider this. It sounds like it is my next step. Thanks

  • http://www.argyleandapricots.com Lori Zimbardi

My husband and I are sooooo ready for an adventure! Just booked us. We’re taking our daughter to family in ATL for that week and then catching a flight to Miami!! Yeah Us!!!! Pretty excited to meet Alice. Is there anything special to do to sign up to meet with her or is the reservation through the link on your page enough?

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

Awesome! Yes, the link on my page is enough. We’ll handle the rest!

      • http://www.argyleandapricots.com Lori Zimbardi

        Perfect!

I wish I could go on this! Sadly, I am getting married a week later and every penny counts! Hopefully there will be a second chance next year!

    • http://alexspeaks.com Alex

to clarify, I am not sad I am getting married…hahaha

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

I hope that is true, too. Thanks.

  • Dale Schultz

Michael, I’m registering for the cruise tomorrow; however, looking at the site with the link provided is a $059 entry price. Is my math wrong? in Christ, Dale

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

Definitely. You might want to call the number instead. I will forward your message to them. Sorry for the hassle.

      Thanks.

  • Matthew Costner

sounds interesting. i came up with the (1) reason i won’t be joining you.

    (1) i pastor an inner city church that can’t afford for me to go.

have fun. will be praying for you all! :)

  • Splatchurch

Seriously considering going to this. However, the Christian fiction book I am writing will not be completed before the cruise. Would this hurt my chances even though I have an outline for the unfinished portion?

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

Its up to you. We are there to provide feedback. We can do that to an outline as well as a mannuscript.

  • Dale Schultz

Michael, I registered for Diana and I this morning. The timing is perfect as the cruise comes during my Spiritual Renewal Leave. We’re looking forward to meeting, and growing to know you. Thanks for being part of this. Looking forward to pitching my book, too.

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

Great! I look forward to meeting you.

  • Christy

Do you still have any spots left on the cruise? Is the one other person who gets to pitch to you randomly picked or picked by best proposal or other criteria? Considering you have 5 daughters, what looks like granddaughters and a beautiful bride, I am convinced you would like my idea =)!

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

We still have room on the cruise. However, all our official pitch slots are full. It’s a pretty small group (less than 100), so there’s a chance we could sit down for a few minutes and talk. Thanks.
