Book Giveaway: Everyone Communicates, Few Connect by John C. Maxwell

I am always surprised at how well books on making presentations do. Presentation Zen, Slide:ology, and Beyond Bullet Points have all done exceedingly well. I have read them all and loved every word.

3-D Book Cover for Everyone Communicates, Few Connect by John C. Maxwell

When John Maxwell told us he wanted to write a book on communication, I assumed he meant a book on making more compelling presentations. And make no mistake about it: John is a master presenter. I thought, Perfect! John is known as a communicator, and his audience will love his take on how to make better presentations.

But this book is about far more than presentations. The title is Everyone Communicates, Few Connect: What the Most Effective People Do Differently. John’s premise is that to be effective as a leader, you must do more than communicate. You must connect. Whether it is in the context of a one-on-one encounter, a small group discussion, or making a speech before an audience of thousands, the best leaders connect with people—in a way that touches their heart and leaves them transformed in some way.

In the book, John shares five principles and five practices that will empower you to connect with people:

Part 1: Connecting Principles

  1. Connecting Increases Your Influence in Every Situation
  2. Connecting Is All About Others
  3. Connecting Goes Beyond Words
  4. Connecting Always Requires Energy
  5. Connecting Is More Skill Than Natural Talent

Part 2: Connecting Practices

  1. Connectors Connect on Common Ground
  2. Connectors Do the Difficult Work of Keeping It Simple
  3. Connectors Create an Experience Everyone Enjoys
  4. Connectors Inspire People
  5. Connectors Live What They Communicate

I found this book to be extremely practical. It was full of ideas I could put to use immediately. In fact, each chapter ends with specific ideas for connecting in various contexts.

I read the book in its initial draft and found it very insightful. However, at our recommendation, John posted it on his blog and solicited his readers’ comments. The chapters received more than 100,000 page views during the eleven weeks they were posted. Eventually, more than seventy quotes, stories, and anecdotes from his readers made it into the book.

In addition, John made more than one hundred changes to the manuscript based on his readers’ comments. As I read the book through for the second time, I found it even more useful. I am not surprised that it has been in Amazon’s top one thousand since it was published, and is currently in the top five hundred.

Whether you are a public speaker, a sales person, a customer service rep, or a receptionist, you will find tremendous value in this book. If you work with people in any capacity and want to connect with them in a powerful way, it is must-reading.

Please note: This give-away is now over. I have already selected the winners and distributed the copies of this book. Everything below this note is left here for historical purposes, so that the comments make sense. However, I have also removed the links.

In order to “seed the market for this book,” I am going to give away 100 copies free. Even more exciting, John has autographed all 100 copies! To get a chance at snagging one, you must take the following three actions:

  1. Leave a comment below. Tell me why you want this book. Be creative. I really do read these comments and base my decisions on them.
  2. Fill out the special form. I have set up a separate contact form to make it convenient for you to provide your mailing address. Please do not put your shipping address in your comment, however. This will automatically disqualify you.
  3. Twitter a link to this post. You can do so automatically by clicking here. If you don’t have a Twitter account, you can use Facebook.

On Friday, April 16, I will select 100 people, based solely on my arbitrary and subjective evaluation of their comments. If you are one of those selected, Lindsey Nobles on my team will notify you via email. If you don’t hear from her, you can assume you didn’t make the cut.

By the way, Jeff Loper, who heads up our Maxwell marketing team, has set up a special web page for this book. It contains several fun resources, including a video of John (which is hilarious), a slideshow, and a sample of the book.

Question: Why do you want a copy of this book? If I give you a copy, do you promise to read it?

I have been a huge fan of John Maxwell since around the middle 80s. I used to listen to his preaching tapes before he became recognized as a leadership speaker.

I am a High School teacher and teach at-risk students. Behind my desk, I keep a wide array of leadership, motivational, etc. type books for my students to read. They know they are always there for them to borrow. I would love to add this book to my collection for my students to be inspired by and prayerfully be used instrumentally to radically change their lives for all eternity.

    Blessings,

Hi! Does posting a bunch of the same comments increase your chances, I see that there are quite a few that have posted a number of times…..Anyway, I may not be a doctor, a pastor or some kind of counselor but one thing I do know is that I need this book to help my husband. He has had social issues since he was a boy and I have been battling a long time trying to find answers for him….and if I have trouble too that doesn't make things any easier. Although I do not have it as bad as my husband but it is hard to help him when I am struggling too. I don't want to live like this forever….I want to learn how to connect with my husband and help him with his social weaknesses. I sure appreciate the opportunity you are offering to enhance the lives of others….What a powerful statement someone once said that "People may forget what you said but, they will never forget how you made them feel." I want to be the kind of person that leaves an imprint on ones heart that, "I care" however, I need the "know how"….communication is lacking in so many ways even in my own biological family there is such a need and I want to be taught how. I had heard about this book through our business training and immediately it intrigued me giving me the desire "I have to have it" and therefore searched online and I found you. I am sure there are many others who are in much greater need than I for this book but I know that whoever you choose to give the books too it will be led of our Father in Heaven, I truly believe that if it is His will and you bless us with this book it will enhance the needs and lives of those in my family as well as our business venture. Thanks again for taking the time to give. I have already posted this site on my Twitter page as well as my facebook and have submitted my address, thanks a bunch!!! FORGOT TO MENTION THAT YES, I PROMISE TO READ THE BOOK!!!

Thanks for the opportunity to read your thoughts on your bolg, it has been a very great learning experience.

This just couldn't be better timing and I'd really like to refer to this book for something I'm currently working on, which has to do with encouraging & empowering the workforce. And one of the key things I'd be concentrating on is communication & how well the senior management connects with the workforce at every level in the organization.

I've Garr's book handy on a daily basis for most of the presentations I work, on a regular basis and my presentation have improved each and every slide, everytime.

I've learnt a lot from John and I can already say that this would be very helpful in my long career to come being a 30 year old professional. Working with all levels management on problem solving & change John has had a great influence on me and this book would make it even better.

I want the book because I'm a pastor, and I preach and teach new messages virtually every week. I'm loking forward to learning more about making a real connection with listeners. If I'm more effective, the world will be a better place. I'll also put a book review on my blog.

We all need help getting our point across. John Maxwell is one of the foremost communicators of our day. I could use some help in my communications skills – to make that connection – and I would appreciate the opportunity to read about how John does it.

  • HarkyBaby

John Maxwell is a great influence for me, even though I am only just starting to get into his work. His insight is incredible yet comes down to incredibly simple truths once they are in your head. His writings are impacting me a lot and even my Bible has John Maxwell's teachings in it. I come from a performance background so connection is a part of my job and as a worship team leader I need to connect with the congregation. I would benefit so much from this book as I know everyone who has posted would. As a young man I still look for great role models and John Maxwell certainly is one. I hope you consider me!

I am intrigued by your offer which was forwarded to me by Steve Hammond of the Real Estate Learning Group. My real estate career puts me in front of new people daily and I have constantly tried to improve my communication abilities with my new contacts as well as build on current relationships. An important aspect of the offer is to not simply read your book but to implement your principles. I look forward to the opportunity.

I've held various leadership positions, most recently in an active church ministry, and have also been called to speak in front of groups. I am always looking for ways to learn how to become a more effective influencer.

But that's not the main reason I'd like to read the book. The main reason I'd like to read this book is because I homeschool our children. Homeschooling, in our family's eyes, is more than academics; it's about discipleship. Our oldest son is soon to enter the high school years, and I've been racking my brain for ways to teach him the importance and how-to's of communication skills.

We are in sore need of leaders who know how to communicate with integrity, and I'd like to empower my children with the people skills they need to make a difference for the kingdom.

I'd like to win this because I have never read a John Maxwell book.

    Ever.

But he is all the rage, so I'd like to see what the fuss is about.

I am an assistant principal at a small Jr-Sr high school and just finished my school safety specialist training. I have a great plan to enhance our school’s safety but the key to it’s success is going to be equal to the staff’s ownership of that plan. How I connect with them about such an important topic will make all the difference. That’s why I would like to read this book.

My church's mission statement where I'm the worship leader is "Connecting People to Christ and Equipping Them for Life." I believe that reading this book and then allowing the leadership of my church to read it as well will cause us and ultimately me, to go about our mission statement in a completely different manner in that we can be even more effective in how we reach our community for Christ and equip those that are members of our church. Would be a blessing to learn from John Maxwell and those that commented on his blog.

I’m a new Amway Global IBO. Communicating is a key factor in the success of my business. Communicating has always been one of my weak points. Before hearing John Maxwell speak at IMPACT 2010, I had a completely different mind-set. I’ve always thought that people should communicate with me. I’ve always thought “Hey, come to me”, “Hey, look at me”, and “Hey, acknowledge my existence”. After hearing Mr. Maxwell speak, my whole world turned upside down. I’ve realize that people shouldn’t communicate with me, but I should communicate with them. I should be the one who should approach them, to look at them, and to acknowledge their existence. Becoming an IBO was my first step to improving my communication skills; and the reason I want the book, “Everyone Communicates, Few Connect”, is because I want to take my communication skills to a higher level.

Also, I am an admirer of the publisher and its mission “to inspire the world.” I’ve consistently enjoyed and appreciated Thomas Nelson books and trust that John Maxwell’s new book will be no exception!

    Michael,

Thanks for the opportunity-I would like to receive this book not just because it is free, but due to its topic- communication is a subject discussed so often but never really grasped. John Maxwell in his other books about leadership grasps leadership and makes it practical, reachable, understandable. I think this book is relevant to ministry, busines, the home and life. I am also curious to see a non leadership book by John- I had the honor to engineer his first books on tape when he moved to the ATL. This book looks like one to read and then share with colleagues, firneds and family.

As a communicator I understand that it is my priviledge and responsibility to embrace every opportunity I have to share what God has spoken to me with others in a clear, practical and memorable way. I am always on the lookout for resources from which to learn and continue to grow in this art. I believe that this book will prove to be one of the books that pushes me to another level as many of Maxwell’s previous books have.

  • http://jamiebg.blogspot.com Jamie

I wasn't going to comment, but that's the very reason I need to comment.

I'm currently in a leadership academy with other nonprofit staff in my city and we are reading through Maxwell's 360 Degree Leadership. And it's delightful. I'm learned how to lead my leaders, lead me peers and lead those I supervise. I can probably even lead those I've not even met who I pass on the highway. Because 360 degree leaders most definitely use their blinkers, right?

However, I can lead in a circle, but can't communicate. Can't communicate my needs, my barriers to success, my goals, my fields of dreams. I just can't.

So I need John to continue to homeschool me on all things leadership – which includes communication. And Michael – you're the ticket to my success.

Did I communicate that well? I hope not.

Since I really like to teach, I want to learn more about how to communicate, not just so I can hear myself speak, but to actually see the "aha" light bulb come on when people hear what I say. I mean connect with them. Connecting with people means that I am speaking into their lives, and that the influence I have is changing mindsets, behaviors, thought patterns, dreams, and more. Who would not want to do that?!

  • Molly Kehrer

Today was my last day as a full time marketing consultant for an amazing Christian radio station, and Monday will mark the beginning of a new season for me as the Marketing Director for a new company. While packing up my things this afternoon, I came across a stack of papers that I had previously used in a staff devotions meeting. On each slip, various employees completed the following statement, “In an effort to further pursue my walk with Christ, I commit to…in the upcoming year.” As I read through each slip and the ways that varying individuals had planned to connect with God and others in the year ahead, it was humbling to recognize that so many of our personal faith goals and challenges have already been met in some way. For a moment, I contemplated tossing the stack into the quickly growing recycle pile, then realized that it would be more significant to “connect” once more with each person in the office by leaving their personal goals within reach. I went desk to desk, leaving notes for those who had gone for the day and passing slips to others. As I walked back to my desk for the last few minutes, there was such a sense of peace for having seen the encouragement through–just one more step. I sensed the opportunity to connect, and I was incredibly blessed by it. Tomorrow, I will be gone from my desk, and Monday, I will settle into a new space with new faces, ideas, problems and successes. And I really pray that, more than my communication as a marketing director, my connections will be significant–life changing, even. I absolutely desire to have a Godly impact.

As I approach this new chapter in life, it’s minorly terrifying to consider a new set of blueprints–but it’s exhilarating at the same time. I’d love to read Maxwell’s insights into effect communication and connection, hopefully gleaning new ideas on how to have the greatest impact where I’m headed next, and hopefully, cultivating a spirit of connectivity wherever I go. And yes. I absolutely promise.

Michael, thanks for sharing this opportunity with us. I too have read a number of books on presentations, and really want to learn everything I can. It sounds like John Maxwell has some great insights to share.

In my experience, those that can connect have the biggest impact. I want to have an impact. I am a hard working and well-liked, but what does that mean if I don't connect with those I am trying to communicate with?

I create presentations (for myself and my superiors), I'm working on developing my leadership skills, I am trying to make an impact with those I work with, and I just started my personal blog. It seems to me that I could use all the help I can get. All of my hard work is wasted if I can't truly connect.

    Michael,

If you were to give a autographed copy to me, I would use it in the silent fundraiser book auction we're having for the United Way of Stanislaus County at our Chick-fil-A Leadercast site on May 7th.

Every year I write letters to authors speaking at the leadership seminar asking if they would sign a copy of their book and donate it to us. John Maxwell is the most difficult to receive an autographed copy from since he is so busy and receives so many requests.

His Admin Assistant has sent us an autographed sticker to place inside a book, but an actual autographed copy by John would be much better. And this would allow us to raise more funds from the auction for our nonprofit.

    Thanks for considering us.

As I was reading your post about this book, I was thinking how much my boss and team would love to use it for a book study. We are professional developers for educational leaders. This would be excellent for guiding our participants to establish quality relationships and a positive campus culture which research says leads to student growth. This post drew me in because I am developing an online course about digital communication and thought this concept is perfect to address during my course. Yes, we can communicate in numerous ways, but make certain to establish those connections for relevancy and value. Back to the old saying quality vs. quantity… I look forward to reading this book and suggesting my department purchases several copies for all of us to adopt these strategies.

Thanks for this opportunity. I want this book because I desire to be a better communicator and a better connector. From the information you've provided above, it seems that this book will benefit me in that regard in both my professional as well as personal contexts. Although I certainly desire to be successful in connecting with my peers in the workplace, when I consider what you said about how "the best leaders connect with people—in a way that touches their heart and leaves them transformed in some way", I really want to apply the lessons in this book to my life as a father to three young children. I greatly desire to do anything possible to ensure that every communication and connection opportunity that I have with them touches their hearts and transforms them in a way that benefits them and glorifies God. I'm hopeful that this book will assist me in doing that.

Several summers ago I was invited to speak at Victory Bible Camp as the main High School Summer Camp speaker. I was not a youth pastor nor had ever been employed as a minister. Victory is located between Anchorage and Fairbanks in some beautiful wilderness. I finally accepted the offer on one condition and that was I spoke on the subjects I wanted to speak to for each of the 7 nights.

I am a home builder in Portland, Oregon and had built over 200 homes in a short career as a Project Manager or the actual builder. How would I connect to young people 22 years younger and keep them interested and even challenge them?

After some time considering this I felt certain to teach each night . ..not from my successes but rather from my failures, mistakes and stupid actions and decisions. Very embarrassing for me to say the least. The result . . .half of the 250 campers skipped snack shack every night, to stay late in the big room and ask me questions or make additional comments . . . but most importantly to tell me they related to it all and I answered numerous questions for them as I spoke my message. After the campers were down (asleep) the camp counselors came to find me by a fireside some where and they kept me up until 3-4am talking about the message.

Had I spoke from my strengths and successes I bet the result would have been very ordinary. Shocking . . . . . just shocking to consider what we think our audience wants to hear and what they are actually starving for. I hope Maxwell helps guide us through our own deceptions when it comes to speaking and communicating.

This book sounds like a wonderful read. I believe the concept of real connection is often lost in the "task list" of a profession or ministry. It's not often a great book about connection looks past the "task list" to making a difference in real life.

I am an aspiring minister going through seminary at this time. As someone who hopes to get it the pulpit from time to time, I know that it is not just about communicating and presenting to people, but about connecting to them. Any help that I can get with understand the best way to communicate to people and connect with them too is of great importance to me. As the same time, it will also help me in my regular 9 to 5 job. The great thing about Maxwell is that he translates from the Christian world into the professional world. Judging from the initial information provided in your article as well as the information I have read on line this also seems like a book that makes a person more well-rounded. In other words, it will help not only my growth as a minister, as a professional, but also in my personal life with family and friends. This book seems like it transcends all areas of life and can work with people ages 2 to 102. So I really look forward to reading this book. Even if I am not blessed with a copy, I am sure that I will get one for myself, so please publish in Kindle format too.  Thanks for what you do Michael. I just signed up to follow you on Twitter and look forward to your post. God Bless.

I'm working with couple of teams and I always trying to get them up to date on any new news and changes. But do I really 'connect' with them. I would say, I need to do better in that area. CABEMANCOM –

I am an associate pastor of a church of about 500 attendees. I also volunteer about twice a year to go on international mission trips (www.visionoutreach.org) to perform cataract surgeries on blind poor people in remote parts of the world. I meet two mornings a week with discipleship guys, striving to motivate them to become disciple-makers.

We as a church are looking at making service format changes, growing, and birthing a new church in the next 3-5 years. I realize that we have more forms of communication than ever, (email, text, twitter, facebook, cell, home phone, etc.) but we seem to communicate worse than ever. Several years ago I took on the personal motto "OO7 = Others Oriented 7 days a week".

I believe that we are all called to reach the world and we do that through CONNECTING WITH OTHERS… and motivating them to in turn CONNECT with others… much like the disciples of Christ. I would love the read and study the book with hopes that it will help me be more effective in reaching the world… a few men at a time.

I think this book would really help me in my efforts as a new writer; especially in the area of platform. Communication and connecting with people are key in developing a loyal readership and in maintaining a platform for future projects. I also hope to be doing workshops in the future for various writers conferences. Please consider me for a free book. I would really appreciate it and pass it along to others in my writers groups.
