BookSneeze: Free Books for Bloggers

A little over a year ago, we announced the Thomas Nelson Book Review Bloggers program. The purpose of the program was to provide free books to bloggers in exchange for a 200-word review of the book. We don’t require positive reviews. We want bloggers to be honest in their assessment of the books they read.

Booksneeze Screenshot

This program has been a huge hit. To-date, we have over 7,500 bloggers signed up. We have received hundreds and hundreds of reviews. In fact, we now deem these as a critical part of our marketing strategy. The reason is that people tend to believe the bloggers they follow more than advertising or professional reviews.

The problem has been the name. “Thomas Nelson Book Review Bloggers” doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue. However, in the spirit of “permanent beta,” I wanted to get something launched rather than wait for the perfect name.

One day, while re-reading Unleashing the Idea Virus by Seth Godin, I was intrigued by his description of “sneezers.” This is the term he uses to refer to those individuals who get so infected with an idea that they become contagious. They spread it to everyone they know.

Almost immediately, the name “BookSneeze.com” popped into my mind. I did a quick search on GoDaddy.com to see if the domain name was available. Surprisingly, it was.

However, we had an internal debate about the title. For starters, Gail, my wife, thought it was gross. A few others questioned it as well. But in the end, we decided to go with it. (There are some advantages to being the CEO!) I felt that it was memorable—especially with the tagline, “Great books are contagious.”

So, today we are officially launching BookSneeze.com. If you are already registered with our Book Review Bloggers program, you will be automatically registered with BookSneeze. If you are a blogger and haven’t registered with our program, let me encourage you to do so. Here are three benefits (repeated from my original post on the program):

  1. Free copies of our best books. We will send you a free copy of the book you are interested in reviewing. In addition, after you have requested a review copy, we will email you a PDF of the first two chapters so you can immediately get started. Meanwhile, we will drop a physical copy of the book in the mail.
  2. Content resources for your blog. We will provide you with free resources to use in your review. These include things like cover art, video or audio clips (when available), external links to other related items, etc.
  3. External links to your blog. We will provide a link back to the your actual review of the book. As you may know, external links are what drive up your blog’s ranking on Google. In general, the more links the better.

What do we require? Bloggers must agree to write a 200-word review—good, bad, or ugly—and post it on their blog and on any consumer detail page for that book (e.g., Amazon.com, BarnesAndNoble.com, BooksAMillion.com, Borders.com, ChristianBook.com, etc.). Obviously, the review can be longer, but we wanted to set the bar low in order to encourage participation. I think this is a case where if the products are WOW, they will generate enthusiasm and buzz. If not, then that will also help us create better products in the future.

We do not require you to write a positive review. If you take a quick look of the reviews on BookSneeze.com, you’ll see that there are both positive and negative reviews. We have never once censored a review or dropped a reviewer for a negative review.

To get started, click here. You must apply to join, but we review all applications promptly.

I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the people involved in this project:

  • Lindsey Nobles, my communications director, supervised the whole project from beginning to end.
  • Nick Francis and Jared McDaniel at Project 83 did the design and HTML/CSS coding.
  • Joshua Paine of LetterBlock built the underlying Web application and applied Project 83’s work to create the new site.

My original goal was to recruit 10,000 active bloggers. We are now three-quarters of the way there. If you know of a blogger who would like to receive free books, please help us spread the word.

Question: What do you think of our re-branding effort? Be honest. I can handle it!
Disclosure of Material Connection: I am the CEO of Thomas Nelson, the company that created BookSneeze.com. In addition, Some of the links in the post above are “affiliate links.” This means if you click on the link and purchase the item, I will receive an affiliate commission. Michael, I'm very proud to have become one of your Book Review Bloggers (or should that now be one of your Sneezers?!) recently, and at the outset I have to congratulate you on the new site! It is far more user friendly and visually easier to use than the previous one. I do have to agree with your wife and say that I'm not outright convinced by the new Book Sneeze title, as much as I like the acknowledgement of Seth Godin; however, it is the kind of quirky tag that could easily reach tipping point. Keep leading the Tribe!

My first reaction to the name BookSneeze.com was… Whaaaa? But after reading your explanation I like it. Sure it's a little gross but that's part of what makes it memorable.

I like the new site and hope to be a more active participant this year.

BookSneeze–wonderful name, possibly gross (especially at first impression, conjuring images of overused library books), but combined with the tagline, the title seems fitting. Most importantly, I'd say this brand is memorable. Congrats on the new launch, and happy 2010.

Feedback? Honestly? Before the re-brand I wasn't interested in the project (bad me). The title BookSneeze grabbed my attention. I applied to be a reviewer! How cool, "I'm a BookSneeze.com Reviewer!"
Thank you Michael for staying on the edge!

I LOVE it! I woke up this morning to an email from you all saying that you had changed the name. I went straight to the site and LOVED the look and the title and everything about it! I feel blessed to have an opportunity to be a part of this. I do not make any money blogging and these books have been my "perk". For an avid reader, receiving a new book in my mail box is like Christmas each time! In full honesty here, every single time I receive a book in my mailbox, I pause and thank God for the blessing!

So thank you for blessing this book reviewing blogger!

One more thing, I realized the power of the book review when I received a text message from a friend 5 states away saying she was in a book store buying Fearless by Max Lucado because of my review. A missionary friend in the Ukraine told me she asked her mom to go to the Christian bookstore and buy her Fearless and ship it to her because of my review!

It was the same with Jenna Lucado's book "Redefining Beautiful". I had a mom in my Bible study who has 4 teens say "I ordered that book you recommended on the website for my girls!" and then a high school math teacher asked to borrow mine. After borrowing it for one week, she returned it and said she had bought a few copies for the girls in her class!

So it is contagious – and it really is working – of course you already know that – but I thought I'd continue to confirm it for ya!! :-)

I blogged about it under the title You've Got to be Kidding when I got the e-mail. You should have listened to your wife; it is gross. It doesn't fit the image I have of Thomas Nelson and since I don't write a blog for eighth graders, I have tried to keep my discussion of bodily excretion to a minimum. I don't intend to change that, so I taking this as an opportunity to declare my intent to no longer write reviews for the program.

    Michael,

The domain name is okay. When I read it I imagined a dusty book that causes a person to sneeze. I agree it's a little gross but the tagline explains it all.

Can I just post a comment about the site landing page? The black, blue and red color combination is a little off and the big fonts don't look very nice. I mean, no offense, but it doesn't look as professional as michaelhyatt.com.

Thanks. Oh and I am one of the reviewers who never posted my review on Max Lucado's Fearless yet. I think I'm gonna do it this week seeing how generous you are to us bloggers.

Thanks for your input. I do appreciate it.

  • Robert Parrish

Personally, I like "BookSneeze.com." It does roll off the tongue, as you point out, Mike, and it's memorable, short and unique. And while the initial thought might be gross (Gail could be right), the tagline helps solidify the intent of the site name.

  • tneal

Whether gross or pure genius, booksneeze.com is memorable. In reading I find goofy, oddball characters and despicable ones as well etched in my memory long after I've finished a story. Whether I liked them or not, I remember them. I like booksneeze.com and I'll remember it.

The name? Hmmm. I'm not sold on it. The problem I have with it is that it does not describe what you are trying to accomplish – unless you've read Seth Godin's book. I hadn't, and I had no idea what you were trying to convey with the title. I worry that others won't as well.

Still, I love the program, and thank you for having it in the first place.

Yep! Love it! Proud to be a "sneezer"… as opposed to a TN BRB whatever-we-were! It's a great program (obviously I love the FREE books) but it has also forced me to improve my writing style. I have a tendency to get sloppy on my blog and just be me. Hi,
I love reading, I love books, I love and believe in the idea that books are contagious. I also really enjoy writing reviews for Thomas Nelson book bloggers. I'm sorry but I don't love the new name. I have enough of a sense of humor to see the funny in it. However the possibilities for awful nicknames are just too numerous; book boogers comes to mind! I really hope you re-think this but if you don't I will still be a part of the team and defend your right to have a silly name.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/michaelhyatt Michael Hyatt

You’re right about the nicknames. I have some, too, but I hate to add fuel to the fire. ;-)

  • http://twitter.com/LyndsD @LyndsD

I think it's great! I am a big fan of plays on words and think the meaning is perfect! I understand where Timothy is coming from however, I think if you get past the name of something and really search and understand the meaning it makes all the better. I also love and appreciate your stance on including the consumer/reader. That is very commendable. I have been wanting to sign up since you first launched the program but because of having a private blog at the time I hadn't. I recently started another public one so have been wanting to sign up. I would be proud to say I am a "sneezer" I LOVE it!! :) Great Job Michael! :) God Bless!

We have had a little pressure (not much) from authors wanting us to drop negative reviews, but we have said that we will include all reviews, positive or negative. Personally, I think it adds to the credibility. I am disinclined to believe reviews when they are all good. I assume that they were planted.

  • http://twitter.com/lukeybela @lukeybela

    Michael,
I love the new title! As a 22 year old young man, I honestly thought the old title was a bit bland. I heard about it a bit, but was never very motivated to get involved. This rebranding perks my interest and makes me want to get involved, even though I'm very new to blogging. Signing up today!

  • Homemaker, MD

I guess I get the idea behind the name change. But it doesn't make sense to people outside the marketing world–it just sounds weird. I just had to explain "viral marketing" to my oncologist husband and then he sorta got why it's called "booksneeze". I'm not sure if I want to trade the old tag on my blog out for the new tag either. The name just doesn't immediately explain what the program is, and it just isn't classy. Don't get me wrong, it's catchy…it just makes us medical people want to go wash our hands a couple more times…

Also, I'm glad to be a part of the book review program, and here is a thanks for the free books. The only thing I would change: faster turnaround to recieve the book. It's usually at least a few weeks before I see a book I request. I'm a pretty fast reader, so you'd probably get more reviews out of me if I either had faster turnaround time or could request more than one book at a time. Just a thought
