Don’t Be Seduced by Vanity Metrics

An email list is more important than:

  • The number of unique visitors your website gets

  • The number of fans you have on Twitter, Facebook, or other social media networks

  • The number of comments your blog posts get

The truth is, these are just vanity metrics. (There, I said it.)

If you aren’t converting these people into email subscribers, then you can’t monetize your platform. And if you aren’t monetizing your platform, you can’t build a sustainable business. Worse, you can’t serve your audience in even deeper, more powerful ways.

The Money Is in Your Email List

Maybe you’ve heard it before, but it is true: The money is in the list.

I learned this the hard way.

In early 2011, I decided to leave the corporate world and pursue something I had always dreamed of doing—speaking and writing full-time. It wasn’t an easy decision, but I desperately wanted to have a bigger, more significant impact.

My immediate challenge was to replace the income I had been making as a corporate executive. I ran the numbers and came up with a game plan: I would need to speak forty times a year, secure a book deal, and do some consulting to make it work.

While this certainly wasn’t a slam dunk, I thought it was do-able. But I quickly came to the conclusion I needed a mailing list to make it happen. How else could I promote what I had to offer, other than the occasional blog post?

How I Learned This the Hard Way

Unfortunately, I had never really paid much attention to my email list. It just wasn’t important. After all, as an employee with a great job, I didn’t need to monetize my platform.

Until I did.

I discovered I only had 2,771 names on my mailing list, despite the fact I had been blogging for more than seven years. This was disconcerting, to say the least. Worse, it would keep me from achieving my dream—if I didn’t fix it.

I came to the conclusion that building my email list was my number one strategic priority. Nothing was more important if I was going to replace my income and fulfill my new calling.

But How I Turned It Around Quickly

So I went to work. I read everything I could. I interviewed experts. I experimented. I discovered what worked—and what didn’t. I made mistakes. (Lots of mistakes.) But I had some successes, too. And my list grew.

Now, three years later, my email list of 2,771 contacts has mushroomed to almost 115,000. And I am adding a thousand people or so a week. Even today, my email list is still my number one business priority—and asset.

I have literally built a multi-million dollar business on the strength of my email list. Ninety percent of my income comes from it.

In this webinar, I want to share with you what I discovered—my “secret formula,” so to speak, for building a massive email list.

What You’ll Learn in This Webinar

I don’t know what your dream is, but I promise: it will happen much easier and much faster if you have a list of raving fans who want to hear what you have to say.

In this webinar, you will discover:

  • The six reasons you need an email list—especially if you are thinking about going pro.

  • Exactly how to install an email subscription form on your site, so you can begin collecting names now. I will walk you through the process, step-by-step.

  • What information you should be collecting and how this directly impacts your conversion rate (number of people signing up).

  • The five best places on your site to ask people to subscribe. Most people are using only one or, at the most, two.

  • Simple, quick ideas for creating opt-in incentives your readers can’t resist. No, an ebook is not the best option. I’ll explain how you can create a more compelling alternative even faster.

  • Which email list management service I use and why. Not all services are created equal. Some are a nightmare and will leave you stranded in technological purgatory.

  • Seven mistakes bloggers make in list-building and how to avoid them. Trust me, I have learned these the hard way.

If you are an author, entrepreneur, pastor, professional speaker, realtor, small business owner, financial planner, corporate brand manager, or anyone passionate about getting your message out, this webinar is for you.

I’ll also answer questions LIVE—a perfect opportunity for you to ask me anything about list-building and strategy. But you must register to participate.

Why You Must Register NOW!

This webinar is FREE. You can access it LIVE on your computer from the comfort of your own home. Yes, I will make a recording of the webinar available sometime after the call.

But—and this is big—if you attend live, I will give you a FREE copy of my brand new resource, The Ultimate Blog Headline Swipe File: 99 Proven Formulas for Crafting Irresistible Blog Headlines.

This is something I have never shared publicly, though I refer to it almost daily. You don’t want to miss this.

Please note: I only have room for one thousand people on this webinar. (That’s the limit imposed by our webinar hosting company.) Therefore, you must register now to participate. I expect this webinar to fill up quickly.

Monday’s Webinar is now full. However, we still have room in Tuesday’s scheduled replay. If you attend, you will still receive the special bonus, as if you attended live. Thanks.

    Look forward to it Michael.

Thanks, Matt. I am super-pumped about it. It is the answer to the #1 question we get at Platform University.

      • http://www.mattmcwilliams.com/ Matt McWilliams

        I’ve noticed :)

  • http://30x1.com/ Bryan Harris

Love it! My “new email subscribers per day” and “site wide optin rate per month” are the top two metrics I track in my business.

Very much looking forward to hearing all of the details of your system!

Clay Collins at Leadpages first turned me on to the idea of doing post specific opt-ins. Since implementing that, subscriptions per unique visitor have been through the roof (12.9% this year).

    • http://michaelhyatt.com/ Michael Hyatt

I’d love to talk about this tomorrow when we have coffee. That is a phenomenal result.

      • http://30x1.com/ Bryan Harris

        Looking forward to it

    • http://www.mattmcwilliams.com/ Matt McWilliams

      Bryan,

By post-specific, do you mean something like this (for example):

Post is about 5 Tips for Making Your Morning Better. Tip #3 – do a 5-minute workout. (Download my 5-minute workout guide)

      And that is an opt-in?

      • http://videofruit.com Bryan Harris

Yes, an optin bonus that is specific to that exact post. I’ve found that my generic optin gets around a 2-4% optin rate. However, I’ve had post-specific optins register as high as a 65% optin rate. It is a cumulative effect, the more post specific you have on your site the higher your site wide optin rate will be.

        • http://www.mattmcwilliams.com/ Matt McWilliams

Super cool. That is something I started doing by accident recently. And you are right, it totally works. I’m getting 1% on generic and 5-10% on post-specific (though, that includes 2-4% duplicates)

I’d love to see what you are doing to get 10+%

Could I hit you up on email?

          • http://videofruit.com Bryan Harris

            sure thing bryan at videofruit

            Done. Look forward to it.

Michael – I read another’s post this morning on the value of encouragement….not in the receiving of it but in the giving of it and what it does to the receiver of the encouragement.
I know I speak for myself and can take an educated guess on behalf of others and perhaps their thoughts –
THANK YOU FOR BEING THE BLESSING YOU ARE AND ALL THAT YOU OFFER IN ADDING VALUE TO ALL OF US!

Yes….I am shouting and the shout is well deserved!

    • http://michaelhyatt.com/ Michael Hyatt

Thanks, Bruce. You are kind to take time to say that. And I AM encouraged!

Looking forward to it Michael. Thanks for your service to us.

I wish I could share this post everyday because it’s so true! Too often we think we need the blog comments and a huge Twitter following when the truth is if we focus on the list our dream to have this support us would happen a lot quicker! I love how you called those things “vanity metrics!”

Thanks Michael for conducting the webinar on a time slot that enables your followers in Asia to join. I am in Singapore.

  • Heather

Your link to the Tuesday replay isn’t working – looks like it somehow got your MH domain name stuck in front of the correct one!

    • http://michaelhyatt.com/ Michael Hyatt

Ugh. Great catch. I think I have fixed them all. I forgot the http:// prefix.

  • http://www.myhelpsource.com/ Guy… @MyHelpSource

Thank you for the excellent webinar, Michael!

Your tips were excellent and they stimulated many additional action steps for my platforms.

Those who tune in for the replay are in for a treat!

    Onward…

    Guy

    • http://michaelhyatt.com/ Michael Hyatt

Thanks, Guy. I appreciate your encouragement!

  • Ray Thompson

My first webinar, where have I been. Great help and lots of nice tips in the mix. Very much appreciated.

    • http://michaelhyatt.com/ Michael Hyatt

Thanks, Ray. I appreciate you attending.

  • Bill Baumgart

Hi Michael, I was just on the call and purchased “Get Noticed” for 3 sites! I have an odd, opt-in bonus question for you. My blog theme addresses cause relevancy for a new generation. I am affiliated with several non-profits working to build greater awareness around their efforts. Given that emphasis, I am considering offering a “gifted donation” as an opt-in bonus for subscribing to my blog.

Example: “Simply become a follower and I’ll plant a tree in Madagascar on your behalf”, or “contribute towards a clean-water project in Tanzania”, or “gift a box of crayons to a child in India”. The subscriber would receive a beautifully illustrated digital certificate of the project with an opportunity to track its progress.

It’s of very modest cost for me in total alignment with my passion and focus. And it serves as one of many simple, but effective ways to further engage people in these transformational stories with hopes they might one day decide to become a direct supporter. Thoughts?

    • http://michaelhyatt.com/ Michael Hyatt

This is a phenomenal idea. I would use lots of pictures to make it real, but this could be powerful.
      Thanks for buying the theme!

  • http://Bestsellerlabs.com/ Jonathan Gunson

Hi Michael. I was intrigued to be in this great sounding webinar, but it took place at 5am New Zealand time. Will there be a replay?

    • http://michaelhyatt.com/ Michael Hyatt

      Yes, if you registered. Thanks.

  • Adam Drake

Hi Michael, I registered for the Tuesday session and, when I went to join in, was rejected because the system wouldn’t allow me to connect using Linux and I missed the whole thing! So disappointed.

I notice you mention releasing a recording of the event – will that be available anytime soon? I’d love to get up to speed with this topic.

    • Madeline Lemon

Hi Adam, Unfortunately the replay expired on Thursday and won’t be available again. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused! Make sure you’re on Michael’s mailing list and you’ll be the first to know when he does another webinar. Thanks!

      • Adam Drake

Michael mentions in his article that the recording will be made available:

Q: I can’t make the LIVE webinar or the scheduled REPLAY. Will there be a recording?
A: Yes, we will make a recording available after the
LIVE and scheduled REPLAY webinars. But, as I explained earlier, it is
to your advantage to attend live.

I’m just wondering when – I’d like to get to hear it as soon as possible.

        • Madeline Lemon

Hi Adam! The recording is what I referring to above. Unfortunately it is already expired (as of Thursday). It was only made available for a couple of days following the live webinar.

          • Adam Drake

Oh, that’s very disappointing. I was holding out for that after I was unable to access the webinar. I didn’t notice any mention of the recording being only available for a short time. Is it possible it could be re-released, or even a transcript or summary of the webinar? I did make every effort to be present (even though I’m 6 hours ahead!) and was only thwarted by incompatible technology.

          • http://michaelhyatt.com/ Michael Hyatt

We might do it again in the future. If you are a member of Platform University, we have made the replay available inside the embers area. Thanks.

  • Dam Mallya

Is there a link where I can watch this webinar now? Thanks!
