The number of comments your blog posts get
The truth is, these are just vanity metrics. (There, I said it.)
If you aren’t converting these people into email subscribers, then you can’t monetize your platform. And if you aren’t monetizing your platform, you can’t build a sustainable business. Worse, you can’t serve your audience in even deeper, more powerful ways.
The Money Is in Your Email List
Maybe you’ve heard it before, but it is true: The money is in the list.
I learned this the hard way.
In early 2011, I decided to leave the corporate world and pursue something I had always dreamed of doing—speaking and writing full-time. It wasn’t an easy decision, but I desperately wanted to have a bigger, more significant impact.
My immediate challenge was to replace the income I had been making as a corporate executive. I ran the numbers and came up with a game plan: I would need to speak forty times a year, secure a book deal, and do some consulting to make it work.
While this certainly wasn’t a slam dunk, I thought it was do-able. But I quickly came to the conclusion I needed a mailing list to make it happen. How else could I promote what I had to offer, other than the occasional blog post?
How I Learned This the Hard Way
Unfortunately, I had never really paid much attention to my email list. It just wasn’t important. After all, as an employee with a great job, I didn’t need to monetize my platform.
Until I did.
I discovered I only had 2,771 names on my mailing list, despite the fact I had been blogging for more than seven years. This was disconcerting, to say the least. Worse, it would keep me from achieving my dream—if I didn’t fix it.
I came to the conclusion that building my email list was my number one strategic priority. Nothing was more important if I was going to replace my income and fulfill my new calling.
But How I Turned It Around Quickly
So I went to work. I read everything I could. I interviewed experts. I experimented. I discovered what worked—and what didn’t. I made mistakes. (Lots of mistakes.) But I had some successes, too. And my list grew.
Now, three years later, my email list of 2,771 contacts has mushroomed to almost 115,000. And I am adding a thousand people or so a week. Even today, my email list is still my number one business priority—and asset.
I have literally built a multi-million dollar business on the strength of my email list. Ninety percent of my income comes from it.
