How I Used a Free App to Lose 11 Pounds in 6 Weeks

Financial advisor and author, Dave Ramsey, says that one of the keys to financial success is to spend less than you earn and do it over a long period of time. The key to weight loss is similar. Burn more calories than you consume and keep doing it until you reach your target weight.

LoseiIt Home Page Example

A Typical LoseIt Home Page

This is also the premise behind LoseIt.com, a Web site and app that Gail and I have been using since the first of the year.

If you are just getting started with Evernote, I suggest that you buy Brett Kelly’s remarkably practical e-book, Evernote Essentials, Second Edition. It is worth setting aside a couple hours to work through this brief, 95-page book. It will save you DAYS of learning Evernote on your own.

Actually, Gail started using it first. She joined a fitness class at a local gym. One of the requirements was that each of the class members had to use LoseIt to track their calorie intake and exercise. Each day, LoseIt sends her fitness coach a summary of the previous day. Talk about accountability!

After seeing Gail’s progress, I decided to give it a whirl for myself. Here’s how it works:

  1. Set up your account and goal. It’s easy, and it’s free. In addition to the web-based program, you can download the iPhone app (also free). This comes in handy when you are on the road or away from your desk.

When you sign in for the first time, LoseIt walks you through a simple wizard. You record your beginning weight, height, birthdate, etc. You then chose a plan. You can chose to:

    • Maintain current weight
    • Lose 1/2 lb per week
    • Lose 1 lb per week
    • Lose 1 1/2 lbs per week
    • Lose 2 lbs per week

Based on your current situation and goal, LoseIt tells you how many calories you can assume per day and then calculates exactly when you will real your goal—assuming you follow the plan.

  2. Begin recording your food consumption. LoseIt has an extensive food database, including most major food brands and even restaurants. You simply pick the meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snack) and then select what you ate.

If you can’t find the food in the database, you can create a custom food or entire recipes. (You can also share these with others.) Each time you add a food, LoseIt subtracts the calorie count from your total daily budget. As a result, you always know exactly how many calories you have left for the day.

  3. Begin recording your exercise. This is my favorite part. LoseIt also has an extensive database of exercise routines. Just like the food module, you can also create custom exercises and routines. When you exercise, LostIt adds back calories to your daily total.

For example, my daily budget is 1,427 calories. If I walk at 4.0mph—which I have been doing during these cold winter days—I get a credit for 665 calories. This means I can consume 2,092 calories on that day and still hit my goal. This motivates me to exercise, because I am immediately rewarded with extra calories I can consume.

  4. Regularly record your weight. You probably shouldn’t do this every day—your weight will fluctuate too much. What you’re looking for is a longer-term trend. Once a week is probably sufficient, though you can choose any frequency you want.

You can even connect the Withings WiFi Body Scale to LoseIt and it will automatically transmit your weight and your BMI data. If you are in the market for a new scale, this is a good option, though it’s expensive.

  5. Use the “Motivators” module. This could also be called the “Accountability” module. You can tell LoseIt to send you a text message, reminding you to record each meal or just one message at the end of the day. You can define when you want to receive each message. You only receive a message if you have forgotten to record a meal.

In addition, you can email your daily summary to an accountability partner. If you are brave, you can even send your summary results to (gulp) Twitter or Facebook. It only posts when you log an exercise, your weight gain or loss (not your actual weight) and when you have achieved your goal.

LoseIt.com also provides extensive reporting. Since all the foods in the database provide full nutritional information, you can monitor, for example, your weekly intake of cholesterol, sodium, carbs, fat, or protein. You can also see charts of your weight trend over time and many more.

For achievers like me, who want to see their daily progress, LoseIt.com is great tool. The app even awards you “badges” along the way. So far, I have collected eight different ones. No one other than Gail sees these, and they have zero monetary value. But for some reason, they really motivate me. It’s kind of like when my piano teacher gave me a gold star for playing a musical piece well.

I am down 21 pounds in almost 2 months with this app. I like it for eating out because there is no guessing on what I should eat.

  • http://familysynergy.wordpress.com JD Eddins

Last year used DailyMile.com quite a bit to keep track of my exercise. I loved that it kept up with calories burned by telling me how many donuts I had worked off.
Unfortunately I got hurt then sidetracked and have not been logging as many runs and haven’t been on the site in awhile. But the other day someone sent me some motivation on the site, so I think I’ll be getting back to it soon.

I had this app for a bit but never really gave it the “workout” it deserved. I also never went online to see all the great stuff they had there! Thanks for the info and congratulations too!

I lost more than 80 lbs in about a year and have kept of for another year. Without knowing it, I used many of the principles promoted by LoseIt…and have enjoyed the benefits!

I’ll be praying for both of your ongoing success!

Have no used any app, besides the bodybuilder.com website… but… congratulations on the weight loss!!!!

I used LoseIt for a few months and shed a few pounds. Then, after traveling for two weeks, I didn’t continue using it and Thanksgiving and Christmas hit. When I thought about going back to it, I checked my weight and found that over the holidays I had continued to lose weight and had reached my goal of losing 10 pounds (5 of those over the holidays).

Recently I picked up a book called “Mindless Eating” and discovered what happened.

In becoming aware (thanks to LoseIt) of how much I was eating, I adjusted my portion size. Our body doesn’t recognize small changes well, which was what I made. My slightly smaller portions became what my eyes would see as normal. Since our eyes tell us what to eat more than our stomachs, that’s what I kept eating even after I stopped tracking.

One more tip based on that reading: We’re trying to eat until we are not hungry rather than eat until we are full. The difference is about 20% of your meal – which is a huge calorie saving.

Gail read the book, Mindless Eating, and really enjoyed it. The title says it all!

Thanks Mike. I have tried LiveStrong and MapMyRun but I think this looks to be a little more robust. The issue I always find is tracking the right anount of calories based on the foods eaten. Now I just need to purchase an iphone :)

  • Dailygaze.wordpress.com

Tap and Track for iPad has a food database that downloads. No need for wi-fi every time you want to log. I also log my 10 glasses of water on the notepad of my low tech phone since it is always with me. So far I’ve only made it to 7 glasses. Might drown if I drink 10 in one day I think!

Lose It! was one of the first apps I started using on the iPhone, before there was even a web app version. I wasn’t as faithful last year, when I started using it, but still managed to lose about 14 pounds during the time I used it. So far, I’ve been faithful this year in doing it every day.

The thing I like most is that by using this simple method, I can change the way I eat as a lifestyle rather than following a strict and difficult-to-keep-up diet. I can eat what I want within reason if I eat reasonable portions. The things that “cost” me too much I no longer want to eat because the enjoyment is not worth the cost.

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

I agree. A friend of mine called this the “gameifiction of weight loss.” In other words, LoseIt makes weight loss a game. I love playing it!

    Hey Michael,

I signed up for this app after reading your post. I’m about a week in and I have to tell ya, totally useful and quite revealing actually! After punching in what I consume on a daily basis, I think I need to change some of my snacking habits whilst at work, heh.

I’m still trying to recover from a back injury. While I do, staying within my daily limit is the goal.

Anyway, thanks for pointing out the app, love it!

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

Great. I have lost another two pounds since writing the post. I am now within two pounds of my goal weight!

I have lost 35 pounds in 4 months with lose it. The biggest advantage is my ultra awareness of what I’m eating. I’ll gladly skip a candy bar now for a full meal later.

First–awesome (I just saw your Tweeted update that you’ve hit your goal already)!

I tried it and have had a hard time with plugging in amounts for cooked meals. I’ve also had a hard time finding certain brand foods. I was wondering how extensive the database is (or if there’s one with a larger one).

Or is there a way that you’ve worked around that for equating database options for restaurant food or a brand they don’t have so there isn’t the constant entering in of new foods. I felt like I was continually adding new foods and that got a little annoying and time consuming. I loved following for the day, but the new food adds have been a hurdle to consistency. Maybe it’s a me problem. :-)

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

I agree: this can be frustrating. However, I increasingly noticed that my diet doesn’t have as much variety as I thought. Once I had entered my favorite foods or recipes, it was easy. Also, you can select “previous meals.” It’s even easier if you are doing it with your spouse as I am. One of us can enter the foot and then “share” it with the other. For me, it was worth the effort. It only took a few minutes a day, and I am thrilled with the result. I haven’t weighed this little since high school!

      • http://brettcohrs.com Brett

Thanks–I’ll calm myself and have some patience. I’m about to turn 40 and all the sudden I realize it’s going to get harder and harder and harder to maintain a reasonable weight. I call it operation 180. :-)

  • Shari

Awesome, thanks for the info. Caring for/worrying about several families with cancer & other severe health issues over the past four years has coincided with a 35 pound weight gain for me. Good old-fashioned calorie counting is working once again. And a goal of swimming a leg of a triathlon in June (700 yards in the James River – what was I thinking when I said yes?). Big goals are key to my staying motivated too.

Just wanted to stop by and say thanks again for posting this App. I’ve never thought of myself as overweight but I knew I had a few pounds to lose. I started to use LoseIt after I saw your post here and have been keeping up with it for 20 days or so. So far I’m seeing some pretty dramatic results. I’ve gone from 225 pounds down to 214.5 lbs in 20 days. My starting goal was to get down to 210 lbs but I think I may change that to 200 lbs by May. It’s also helped me focus on getting active and exercising again. It’s nice to be able to do push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, and much more. Thanks for showing me this tool and helping me get into better shape!

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

Those are great results. Good for you!

  • TNeal

My wife should be the one to thank you for this post. I don’t snore anymore and she sleeps a lot better at night.

I’m down 10 pounds since I started charting my exercise and meal habits. My goal is another 12 pounds which would break a two-decade cycle of being heavier than I should have been.

Now if you’ve got any advice about sharing the covers better, my wife would be appreciative.

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

Hilarious! I’ve lost almost 19 so far. It really does work.

  • Twinny23

I am having trouble because of all the traveling I do for work. I am out of town on business about 20 days a month. I work out almost everyday but the food is a problem as we eat out 1-2 times a day on these business trips and obviously healthy selections are limited. When I’m home it’s very easy because I can plan. Any ideas/tips?

    • http://www.tnealtarver.wordpress.com TNeal

This weekend starts a series of graduation parties for me (i.e. lots of good food) so I’ll be beta-testing these thoughts in church basements and people’s backyards for the next week or two.

I’ve always been active and felt, to lose weight, I just needed to exercise more. I’d watch what I ate (with no idea what I was watching) but only yo-yo-ed between 188 and 200, leveling out pretty much in the 195 area. I dreamed of 175 but never even sniffed at the bottom end of the 180′s.

Until LoseIt.com. That site trained me to see what I was actually putting into my mouth. I’ve kept a daily record of both exercise and meals, snacks, whatever I eat. That discipline taught me to really know what I was eating. Beef or chicken? Chicken. Why? Because that’s what nutritionists say? No, because the caloric intake between the two has an enormous gap.

If I’d make one recommendation, keep track of what you eat. Let that discipline teach its own lessons that you can apply to your eating decisions. You can shape what you do at home and on the road based on what you discover. You have a bigger challenge because you do travel. So I’d be interested in knowing how that works out for you.

By the way, 174 this morning.–Tom

    • http://michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt

I travel a lot, too. It takes a little more work on the road, but it is still limited. In the perfect world, I want to eat healthy and manage my calorie intake. But, if push comes to shove, I will opt for managing calorie intake. Even in a fast food restaurant, you can find out what is the lowest calories and go for that. Almost all restaurants have low-calorie options.

Most better restaurants will make something healthy for you. For example, if there’s nothing on the menu, I simply ask for salad with a piece of grilled salmon or chicken. Nearly every restaurant can do that.

Hope that helps. I am at 175.8 lbs to day. I have lost 20 lbs since the first of the year and am at my goal weight. (Actually 175 is my goal, but I bob around that number 174–176.)

I really liked this post.  About the same time that you wrote this I had the idea that I would write up a post about loseit as well.  Now I just send people here.  I’ve been using loseit since about the 2nd week of Jan and am down 56 pounds.  It still takes a lot of hard work, but by tracking your food really opens your eyes to serving sizes and how much food you are eating versus what you are expending.

    • http://www.tnealtarver.wordpress.com TNeal

Jeremiah, congratulations. That’s great. I’m down 30 pounds since late February. I live in Wisconsin but tell folks I’m back down to my Texas weight. And you’re right about the hard work. LoseIt, the bathroom scales, and the need for a new wardrobe all testify that the hard work’s been worth it. Live long and prosper. :-D –Tom

It’s a great app if you’ll stick to it and be truthful about what you eat.  Thanks for the blog post, I’ve just started telling my weight loss story on my own blog.  This is my health category if you want to check out my story: http://dannypoyner.com/category/health/  More is coming, but I have to get through this paper due on Thursday first.

This app looks amazing, but it was just too not expensive for me to give it a go. There is also no offline database associated with it so it only works if you have an internet connection..

I’ve been using this app for a few months now (on your recommendation after you mentioned it in one of your October 2011 blogs). I will keep using this in the new year.

I used FitDay.com the first time I lost weight — that was after the birth of my first baby. It was a great tool for me. But when I was pregnant with my 2nd baby, I gained the weight back and didn’t try very hard to lose it again until this spring, seven years after baby #2 was born! This time, I read the book Eat to Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. I used his advice (eat 2 pounds of veggies per day, skip all animal products, use almost no salt) to lose weight and get healthy. I lost about 13 pounds in the first three weeks (I know that sounds dangerous but it is typical for an Eat to Live person in the early stages of the lifestyle change) and I’m down about 27 pounds now, a few pounds lower than my goal weight, actually. It’s been easy to maintain — in fact, I keep losing another 2-3 pounds/month without trying, and no tracking anything. I love it. I feel free. And, my cholesterol has dropped from 223 to 157. Pretty incredible. Dr. Fuhrman has an online community for people who need extra support, but I seemed to do okay without it — it helps that my family joined me on the journey. Last month I finally came clean and blogged about my changes. Here’s a link: http://thefriendlyhome.blogspot.com/2012/10/lifelong-struggle-over.html

  • Me

I started using Lose It! on December 28th and I was about 226 (male, 5’8″, sedentary mostly).  Today, January 30th I am now 209.  17 lbs in a tad over a month is pretty good.  I found the key to be finding foods that are plain enough (like veggie sushi) with a touch of flavor, that you are satisfied but don’t crave more.  However I am using  maybe 1/2 as many calories as the app is telling me to, so that’s the other half of it.  …however, very little formal exercise.
