Learning to Recognize WOW

The wow is all around us. It occurs more often than we think. However, if we are going to get good at creating wow experiences for others, then we need to learn to recognize them when they occur.

just pretty

I started thinking of some of my wow experiences while on a run a few days ago. In just a few minutes I wrote down this list of 20. I’ll bet I could have gotten to a hundred or more if I had spent the time. My goal here is to ignite your thinking, so that you can come up with a list of your own.

These are in no particular order:

  • Catching giant halibut with my dad and brother off the northern coast of Elizabeth Island, Alaska. We caught seven!
  • Playing Augusta National Golf Club and seeing my friend, Tom, get a hole-in-one on number 12, one of the most famous holes on the planet
  • Kissing my wife, Gail, for the very first time, more than 31 years ago.
  • Swimming through the underground rivers in Xcaret, Mexico (outside of Cancun) with Gail.
  • Walking on the beach with my family in Búzios, Brazil, a little village about two hours from Rio.
  • Catching more than 100 Crappie with my dad when I was about six years old. We ran out of minnows, and my dad resorted to using pieces of his t-shirt. The fish kept right on biting!
  • Having dinner on the porch with one of my daughters and son-in-laws, enjoying a few hours of being fully present.
  • Driving through the Western Highlands of Scotland on our way to the Isle of Skye while listening to Dougie MacLean’s Who Am I album.
  • Fishing for rainbow trout in a mountain stream in Eleven Mile Canyon, Colorado—and actually catching several!
  • Watching the giant elk graze and bugle at sunset in the Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.
  • Unboxing my first iPhone and being stunned by the attention to detail in the packaging.
  • Reading the Tom Swift, Jr. books when I was a young boy, hoping that the series would never end.
  • Watching The Fellowship of the Ring movie (the first in the Lord of the Rings trilogy) and forgetting that it was just a movie.
  • Seeing each of my five daughters born—and then holding them in my arms.
  • Seeing Les Misérables performed in the Globe Theatre in London.
  • Looking down at the Aegean Sea from the balcony of the Simonas Petras Monastery on Mt. Athos, Greece.
  • Getting a call from my publisher, telling me that my first book had hit the New York Times list. It was initially rejected by more than 30 publishers. It stayed on the list for 28 weeks.
  • Sitting on the patio of the Skamania Lodge on the Columbia River Gorge in Washington, listening to an audio recording that Gail and my friend, Dan Meub, had prepared just for that day.
  • Finishing my first half marathon and coming across the finish line to the cheers of my family.
  • Talking with two of my sons-in-law on the porch during a mountain thunderstorm while attending a Wild at Heart Boot Camp.

And this is just the start. It is amazing how many wow experiences each of us has had, if we just take time to notice them. I was wowed all over again, just thinking about these!

Question: What are your 3–5 all-time favorite wow experiences? Share them with us here, so that we can all get better at recognizing wow.

    let's see, wow moments:
    1. the first time I drove along the Highway of Heroes and saw hundreds of Canadians lining bridges waiting to honour fallen Canadians as the motorcade passed by. Now I stand on one of those bridges.
    2. catching the moment between my "wild girl" baby sister and her new born daughter when she looked down at her, promising to love and protect her above all else. She's done it too, her daughter is now 25.
    3. driving up into the hills of Northumberland County in Ontario and looking in awe at the carpet of fall colours alongside the expanse of Lake Ontario

    WOW moments:
    1. Giving birth (times five). The amazement and privilege of co-creating life with the Creator is unmatched.
    2. Skydiving against a Colorado Rockies backdrop. Plunging toward earth at 125 mph+ just before floating like a feather under a brilliant canopy while gazing down at the world as God might was worth any risk.
    3. Kissing my healthy grandmother good-bye and suddenly knowing it would be the last time I saw her, then kissing her again and telling her how much I loved her.
    4. Hearing God speak audibly with peace surpassing understanding in an hour of need.
    5. Any Sunday morning when the Holy Spirit's presence comes over me as I lift praise to my Lord and King.

I was thinking the same thing, Mary. Children don't seem to have to learn this. Maybe it's only those of us who have dulled our senses with over-indulgence throughout life that need to learn this again. http://wwwpenandpalette-susancushman.blogspot.com

1.) Getting to know my husband in our dating/courtship and thinking nothing but "Wow!" No guy I had ever met compared to him.

2.) Getting through the pain and agony of a natural birth last October to my son John Samuel, and the euphoria and overwhelming gratefulness I experienced when I held him in my arms for the first time.

3.) Training successfully and completing the Richmond VA Marathon in 2004 at 4 hours and 15 minutes… and a few bruised toenails later! The feeling at the finish line was indescribable.

    1) The birth of my first son. Not to diminish the rest but as a father, the first had WOW.
    2) Traveling to Singapore with YWAM on a missions trip. Orchard Blvd at night is a sight to impress
    3) beginning our new business 4 years ago and watching God make miracles happen still makes me feel small in comparison and amazingly love by a great Father

Thanks Michael for reminding us to remember these moments. Top three are hard to choose, but here it goes-
    1. Being present for the birth of my two children
    2. Seeing God miracuously answer prayer for my son's critical health situation when he was a child.
    3. Stepping inside the chapel at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY and for the first time experiencing an Orthodox liturgy, even though it was in Slavonic- the presence of God was so tangilbe.
And there are so many more. Of course there are hard times and trials, but there are always WOW times. God is good!

    1) Being baptized (I was 36). 2) The first time my daughter (now 6) said "I love you daddy". 3) And, this is no joke….. sorry if it grosses anyone out, but it was truly remarkable. My wife and I were in our bedroom watching a funny Saturday Night skit about this couple who were sitting around and saw the biggest roach they had ever seen, and it turned out it was another actor in a roach suit. The husband chased the roach around, the wife is screaming… it's chaos. The roach actor scurried around the room, and did the things that roaches do, like stopping in his tracks to hide behind a table leg, like no one could see him. Finally the husband and roach were both behind the couch. The actor in the roach suit ducked down so you couldn't see him, the husband took off his shoe, started pounding, and you saw some white goo fly up all over him as he swung his shoe. During the skit I heard a rustling sound to my left. There was a newspaper on the floor. Right as the skit was over, I went over and lifted the paper, and I saw the biggest roach I had ever seen, and the only one I had ever seen in our house. My wife screamed, I started chasing it around the room, it was chaos. It went over by a piece of exercise equipment and tried to hide under the leg. It got away. I chased it with my slipper in my hand, finally cornered it again, swung my shoe, and, you guessed it…. white goo. It completely mirrored the skit we had just watched. There are many more meaningful WOW experiences in my life, but this was truly one of the weirdest, and one I will never forget.

1 – http://www.tangle.com/view_video.php?viewkey=cd2e… blows me away every single time and there is something in the majesty of this production that mirrors the hugeness of God

1 – http://www.tangle.com/view_video.php?viewkey=cd2e… blows me away every single time and there is something in the majesty of this production that mirrors the hugeness of God

2 – Being pulled from the Ocean having given up trying to save myself and having accepted that I was about to meet my creator…that first gulp of air as I was pulled back above the water by someone who had noticed I was in trouble and risked his life for mine…I've never written it that way before, what a metaphor….blog post coming up

3 – Two Christmas's ago when my daughter was convinced there was no Father Christmas but somebody slipped out the back door and ran around the house to leave a present and hand written apology from the man himself because the present had slipped behind one of the seats in the sleigh. She just came back into the room after answering the door, checked out that everyone was present in the room and her mouth just fell open…Great moment (and she forgave me when she worked it out months later)

We would all keep a WOW sheet nearby to remind us to look for the WOW, the positive aspects of life, even in the midst of negativity or strife. :)

My list is endless but here are a few top of mind right now…
    1. The everyday laughter from my two daughters.
    2. Looking outside my window right now as the rain pours down to give life.
    3. Exploring the Ruby Falls cavern and seeing a giant underground waterfall.
    4. Opening my first IRS envelope (as a business owner) and actually getting a refund instead of owing taxes this year. :)

Side note… would really love to see you do a post and expand on your book that hit the NY Times list. What you did back then from a marketing direction to help it grow legs or if the legs sprouted and ran off on their own, etc.

Here are a few of my WOW moments:
1.) When I was 8 years old, I lied to my mother about where I was going, and she couldn't find me . I was switched and grounded for two weeks. I learned to love truth.
2.) When I was 18 years old, I was getting frustrated because my boyfriend wasn't responding to my efforts to evangelize him. God spoke to my heart with these words, "You're saying one and doing another." No more hypocrisy for me.
3.) Back in 1978, my husband was on the point of death. Although the doctor gave me very little hope for his survival, my husband came through brain surgery just fine. We won the spiritual battle through Christ.
4.) Giving birth to and nursing our seven children. I've spent a good chunk of my life being pregnant (63 months) and nursing babies (almost 9 years). I loved every minute!
5.) Back in May, I received my first five-year license for English 7-12. Since I was offered my job in 2002, I have worked hard to achieve that English license. After 4 undergraduate English courses, 6 Praxis tests, and a master's program, I can say, "I did it!"

    1. Playing playing Scrabble with mom and having some of the greatest conversation and laughter ever…and also knowing that somehow she will be able to make 7-letter words even with the Q, Z, X, & J in her hand.
    2. Sitting on the sands of the Pacific Ocean with my best friend every Labor Day evening catching up on what's going on in our lives and then holding each other accountable.
    3. Camping as a family at Yellowstone when a Grizzly bear grazes the tent. as we slept.
    4. Annual weekend getaways with 15 girlfriends. This is our 29th year!
    5. Sitting at dad's knee not only because I loved him and did this so often but because he had Alzheimers. His last lucid moment to me was, "I was praying for you to come." One month later the Lord took him home.

    1) everything about the privilege of being pregnant, hearing the heart beat, (oh, the most beautiful sound), feeling my two sweet babies roll, kick and have hiccups, and being present through miracle of birth. Though as mentioned in comments above you sure don't have to be the one doing the pushing to experience the true miracle and evidence of God in this moment.
    2) the days our two precious boys accepted Christ. (I could ramble about this WOW and their baptisms too :-) )
    3) the heart-wrenching day I had to talk to two different sets of parents, back to back, as a preschool director about their children's behavior (after many attempts at communicating, modifying lesson plans, praying, redirecting, etc.). Being a die hard, people pleaser I was running on pure faith in God and fumes at this point and asked Him to carry me and speak through me cause I knew I could not do this. His presence and guidance was so OBVIOUS remembering the conversations and outcomes. I am shaking and tearing up to write about it.
So in awe of Him and His love and faithfulness in all things!

    1. Introducing my dear friend Lisa Jefferson (the operator who took the 911 call from Todd Beamer on September 11th) to Mayor Rudy Giuliani when he was in town campaigning for my husband. These two American heroes had never met.
    2. Feeling the warmth of Dave's palm in front of the altar as he held my hand to take our vows.
    3. Watching Dave hold our daughters after they were born. What blessings they are!

Some universal joys go without saying, like experiencing the birth of a child and sharing wedding vows. Here are some specific to me.
    1. Giving my life to the Lord, and then looking at the world with new eyes.
    2. Negotiating giant boulders in Anderson glacier's terminal moraine for hours and getting only a little closer to the glacier.
    3. Sheltering in a flimsy tent at 5,000 feet in a summer storm.
    4. Hearing the unforgettable sound of tropical cyclone Karen trying to take the roof off my house in the Australian outback.
    5. Leading a young boy to Christ.
