Catalyst West 2010

This page is specifically designed for the attendees of the Catalyst West Conference 2010 in Irvine, California on April 21–23, 2010. It is designed as a repository for my slides and other resources.

The slides I used in my Lab presentation on April 21 are embedded below. I use Apple Keynote rather than PowerPoint, so I thought a PDF would be the most accessible format.

If you are serious about building a platform, I would strongly urge you to read the following books:

  1. Tribes by Seth Godin
  2. Crush It! by Gary Vaynerchuk
  3. Trust Agents by Chris Brogan and Julien Smith

You can also sign-up for Google Reader here. It is free. This is the easiest way to read and keep up with blogs, so you don’t have to search for the content. Instead, it is “pushed” to you, every time the blogger posts something new.

To add a blog to the reader, go to the actual bog site. When you get to the blog, click on the RSS symbol. It is usually in the address bar or visible on the home page itself. It looks similar to this:

Here are the blogs I recommend to get you started:

You might also find these specific blog posts helpful in learning about Twitter:

You can also do a search on my blog for “blogging” and “social media.”

Question: Did you find value in the presentation? If so, please comment below.

Thanks for your slide presentation. I didn't know you used to be a literary agent! You really have worked your way around this business, from every angle.

I'm working on integrating all my sites into one, and recently I've honed my tribe. Suddenly, after defining it and giving myself permission to define it, I suddenly am connecting so much more with those folks. I'm getting more followers, more friend requests, etc. since I defined it. And I didn't even tell others about it much.

I needed to let go of the many good things so I could concentrate on the thing God's uniquely gifted me to do, to help those who struggle find healing & know they're not alone. It's been a revolution for me.

I heartily recommend Tribes to any author looking to think strategically (and in a kingdom minded way) about their message. Through the process of talking to key marketing and brand experts, I realized I was leading several tribes in an average manner.

It was nice to meet you in person yesterday. You gave one of the best presentations that I have seen in a long time. Your slides were powerful and flowed smoothly with your speaking. You seemed relaxed. Your content was very applicable to your audience. I talked with three people afterward that are thinking about creating an online presence and they found your presentation to be very helpful. Mission accomplished!

    Michael,
Great to meet you and chat about our friend Bob Wallace. Bob is now working on an amazing project in Hollywood which I didn't mention due to time constraints. Your presentation was inspirational; the whole audience was fully engaged and excited. I personally am changed and motivated to dive into the world of blogging and find a tribe! Thank you!

Absolutely! I was looking forward to the session (you're one of the reasons why I knew I had to go to Catalyst this year) and it was really worth it. Your presentation was packed with great insights. Thank you for being so generous with your tips! By the way, I loved the Keynote presentation!

Hi Michael, I notice that you don't have any books on platform by women. Nor do you recommend any blogs by women. I wonder why this is? I have written a book on platform development for writers that has 50 recommendations on Amazon. It's called, "Get Known Before the Book Deal" and it's published by Writer's Digest Books. Joe Wikert from O'Reilly Media called it "the author platform bible" when he received his copy. I thought you might like to know that it exists since you are writing and speaking on platform development for writers. I'd be happy to send you a copy myself. Thanks for all of your great sharing over the years. I've learned a lot from you.

I honestly don't pay any attention to gender. If a resource is good, I am happy to recommend it. Unfortunately, I have not heard of your book. I would love to read it. You can email my assistant Vicki at vparr at thomas nelson dot com. She can give you my mailing address.

By the way, I do recommend several women bloggers on my Links page.

      Thanks.

    Hello Michael,

I am in the early stages of building my own personal platform, and I truly enjoy reading your insights on the topics of leadership, social media, and productivity.

Quick question, I could not find your embedded presentation on Building a Platform. Is this something that you will share with those who did not attend the conference? Also, if you have posted it, perhaps my browser isn’t pulling it in. Would there be an alternate location to find it?

    Thanks for your help.

    Mike
