What Matters Now: A Free eBook from Seth Godin (and a Few Friends)

Every year at about this time, Time magazine and a few other periodicals run special issues on what to expect in the coming year. They typically invite various experts and pundits to share their views of the future.

Seth Godin decided he wanted to do something similar and distribute it electronically. So, several weeks ago, he invited about 70 of us to write a page for an eBook called What Matters Now. He asked each of us to write a brief article (no more than 200 words) with a single word as the title. I wrote on the topic of “Vision” (see p. 15).

The good news is that the PDF is free. You can view it in the embedded Scribd player above or you can download it here. Inside you will find articles by such writers as:

… and many others. The goal of the book is to demonstrate that big thoughts and small actions make a difference. I couldn’t agree more and am honored to be included in this esteemed group.

I know it sounds like it is a supper Christian answer but I think one of the most important things is who one thinks JESUS is. He made some outrageous claims, so Him being just a good teacher is not an option. Over the next years who JESUS is is going to be big in a personal way, a corporate way (for Christian based/run business) and for Churches.

Content in this eBook is fantastic, especially with 1 word titles and under 200 word content from each contributor. Keeps it concise and digestable. Also love how Seth integrated doing Good into the ebook. How he launched it overall is inspiring as well.

To me, and this reinforces why I love how he launched it, What Matters Now is US. You, me… WE. Connectivity and collaboration leads to greater impact.

(His new book pre-order sales ranking on Amazon is climbing up the charts as well… no doubt as a result of this eBook).

Thanks for sharing this and I'm looking forward to digesting over the Holidays. What I'll be working on next year is Balance & Boundaries. Balance is a word that I think people use to be apathetic. But my life I have too many pendulum swings in effort. I set goals, push myself to the point that even after achieving them I'm too tired to enjoy. So my goal is to learn to pace myself and run the marathon versus sprinting as long as I can, pass out until I recover, then sprint some more.

"Small actions make a difference"

That statement reminded me of research by University of Michigan strategy professor, Karl Weick, whose work popularized the phrase “small win.”

Problems often seem too huge to tackle. But, it's often possible to reconceptualize a problem in a way that allows it to be attacked in a series of small steps.

Sometimes one small change is sufficient. Other times, repeated application of the same small step leads to resolution. Either way, it's amazing what can be accomplished with a small change.

I'm ready for ALL GOD'S CHILDREN to start acting like they belong in the same family. Encourage each other, build up each other instead of treating everything like a competition. Let's make 2010 a year where Papa smiles upon His kids for working together.

I think what will matter most during the next year is our faith in God through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus once said that the work of God is to believe on him whom He sent (John 6:28-29). To find the knowledge, understanding, and wisdom that we need from God (in order to overcome the battle against us) comes only through our diligence in seeking Him with everything we have.

A great, thought provoking assemblage – and very glad you were included.
I'll be re-reading and working on "what does this mean" a lot.

A HUGE problem: The word FAITH doesn't seem to appear anywhere in it.
JESUS CHRIST isn't there, in fact GOD isn't there other than as part of an explitive of one sort or another. Lot's of "do good", empathy, social justice, etc. – great stuff.

A challenge for you, Michael – a dare: Recast each of the articles in relationship to the Truth of the Word and the results and practical application of that in our lives and the world!
