We live in a crazy noisy world. It’s like there’s a war on stillness. You can’t go anywhere without being subjected to an unrelenting stream of voices, music, sounds, and noise.
This is an assault on our soul. It robs us of our energy and our focus. We spend our days endlessly distracted by trivial things instead of paying attention to those things that matter most.
The key to regaining our sanity is to practice the ancient art of stillness.

While I don’t have enough experience on this subject to speak authoritatively, maybe that is a benefit. I have forgotten what it is like to be ‟a beginner.”
So in that spirit, let me offer a few suggestions for how you can practice stillness in your own journey and reclaim some interior margin.
- Schedule a time.
- Find a place.
- Set a timer.
- Relax your body.
- Quiet your mind.
- Be present.
- Learn to return.
Perhaps the most important thing is just to start. It’s easy to blow the discipline of stillness off as something you don’t have time for. Don’t. The busier you are the more important it is.
You need this in your life more than you know. Even if you can only set aside five minutes a day, do it. And if you miss a day or two, don’t beat yourself up. Just start again.

Tip of the Week
Do you hate email? I know I do. Even with a commitment to inbox zero, I struggle to keep up.
Last week, I was trying to understand this, and I realized that 90 percent of my messages come from my teammates. That’s fine, because I want to be available to them, but it was out of control.
- I was copied on conversations I didn’t need to be part of.
- I could never find anything, even when using Mail’s search function.
- It just felt overwhelming and cumbersome.
My friend, Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income, suggested we give Slack a try. It is like group messaging on steroids. It’s kind of like Basecamp, but instead of being project-centered it is more conversation centered.
We decided to give it a try for a day. We loved it. I got about 20 email messages all day, which was huge. All the conversations were happening inside Slack.
The cool thing is you can use it to share images, files, links—basically anything. You organize everything around ‟channels.” You can then subscribe to the channels that interest you.
It’s really slick. I suggest you give it a try with the people you communicate with on a regular basis, whether those are inside your company or out.
