The 3 Forces That Shape Character [Podcast S02E09]

Welcome to Season 2, Episode 9 of the This Is Your Life podcast. In this ninth episode, Michele Cushatt and I discuss the importance of character and the forces that shape it.

Charisma may be useful in attracting a following, but it is largely useless when it comes to achieving a long-term, positive impact on the people and organizations we lead. For this, we need character. Effective leadership is an inside-out job.

I talk a lot about platform on my blog and in my podcast. But the ultimate platform—the root system under the oak tree—is your character. We have to understand that there are three forces that shape who we are at the core of our being:

  1. The input we consume.
  2. The relationships we pursue.
  3. The habits we acquire.

Your character is ultimately the thing that’s going to shape your future, your impact, and your influence in the world, so it’s important that we pay attention to those forces that shape it.

My favorite part of doing these podcasts is participating in the conversation they provoke. Each week, I ask one question. This week, it is this:

Question: Which of these three forces do you need to give attention to at this stage in your development as a leader?
